Realme U1- an Underpriced smartphone?

Realme U1 is the first smartphone from Realme that compelled us to write about it. As we are seeing the market trend of Realme for past couple of months, especially during Diwali sale they sold nearly 2 Million smartphones.  They are emerging in India market very well and Realme is started expanding in South Asian and Southeast Asian countries. This is really an excellent growth for a company which is less than 1 year old. Currently, Realme has launch 5 smartphones in India market and all the smartphone are priced very competitively. All the 5 Smartphone are in less than Rs.20,000 ($300) category, in which Xiaomi has its upper hand till now.

Realme is following the same strategy used by Xiaomi when they landed in India. Realme smartphones are still selling only through online sales. And they are building a strong community with more than 30 lakh community member as of now. The only thing that bothers about Reale is Color OS since it is OPPO subsidiary company. But this is not a big deal as many of the smartphone buyers are looking into the UI/UX as of now. But in future Realme has to bring on some changes in Color OS customization for Realme or come up with new OS for their smartphones. All Realme Smartphones design is completely new and looks stylish.

Small history about Realme is “Realme” first appeared in China in 2010 as “OPPO Real”.It was a sub-brand of OPPO Electronics Corporation until its separation in 2018 when it became an independent company. On July 30, 2018, former vice president of OPPO and head of OPPO’s overseas business department Bingzhong Li (Sky Li) announced his official resignation from OPPO and his intention to establish Realme as an independent brand on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo. Realme launched its first product “Realme 1” in India in May 2018, the Indian market was the first step for Realme. As Realme targets the global market, it will continue to expand its reach geographically, with potential target markets in Southeast Asia, starting with Indonesia for its Southeast Asia debut.

A glimpse of Realme U1 was launched on 28th November 2018 as an Amazon India exclusive.  It has a teardrop notch display with the MediaTek Helio P70. Realme U1 has a 6.3-inch FHD+ display, 13MP + 2MP dual rear camera, 25MP front camera with 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB storage. Realme U1 has 3500mAh battery and runs on ColorOS 5.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Realme latest “U Series” target photography segment similar to Xiaomi “Y Series”. Realme is very good in segregating the smartphone according to price and target audience. As we can see that “Pro series” target is to provide Flagship level experience, “Realme Series” target Mid-range with more juice and “C Series” target entry level, which is less than Rs.10K.


The Realme U1 looks very similar to the recently launched Realme 2 Pro. The rounded edges offer good grip, and the matte finish of the rear means it’s not slippery. The display is raised a bit from the rest of the body, so its edges don’t seamlessly blend with the sides of the body. The volume rocker and power button placement is good, which is reachable. Realme U1 has the 3.5mm headphone jack and micro USB charging port at the bottom. Overall, the build quality of the Realme U1 looks premium.


The first thing you will notice on the Realme U1 is that “display looks gorgeous”. The waterdrop or dewdrop notch looks pretty on itThe 6.3-inch display on the Realme U1 has a 450nit maximum brightness, which makes it very legible under direct sunlight. It’s an IPS LCD panel with a 1080×2340-pixel resolution and 409ppi, which means you get sharp images and vivid colors. You also get a basic color temperature adjustment slider in the Settings app. Realme has used Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the front.


Realme U1 is the smartphone with Helio P70 processor, which is made by MediaTek. Helio P70 is the flagship chipset from MediaTek, so it should be able to perform any task on day-to-day usage like a piece of cake. Geekbench 4 and AnTutu results of the Realme U1 with Helio P70 inside is performing better than Snapdragon 636 and close to Snapdragon 660. As you can see in below screenshot.

This clearly shows that MediaTek is emerging a big competitor against Qualcomm. Realme U1 comes with the Realme Game Space which helps while playing games by freeing up the memory to run games smoothly, while also muting app and call notifications so as not to hinder your gaming experience. We hope that with above Benchmark score Realme U1 can do well on most of the games in the play store.


Realme U1  is a selfie-focused phone, So let’s start with the front camera. It’s a 25-megapixel Sony IMX 576 sensor with an f/2 aperture. In daylight, the Realme U1captures detailed selfies, with good skin tones and colors in general but in low light, it might struggle. The Realme U1 sports a dual camera assembly on the back which includes a 13-megapixel camera shooting through a lens with a f/2.2 aperture and a secondary 2-megapixel depth camera. The aperture on the depth camera is f/2.4.


Realme U1 includes a moderate-sized 3,500mAh battery. Does not support a fast or quick charge.

  • 4GB RAM + 64gb Storage- Rs. 13,999.

And Realme U1 is exclusive only on Amazon in India. And the first sale starts on November 5,2018.
